Scandium, element number 21, is named for Scandinavia. It was discovered by Swedish chemist Lars Fredrik Nilson in 1879 and named for his homeland. Its first English appearance is in that year, in the September issue of the journal The Academy.
Scandium has the chemical symbol Sc, taken from the first two letters of its name.
