Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English [Historical]

Partridge, Eric. A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English. Edited by Paul Beale. Eighth ed. New York: Macmillan, 1984.

One of the “classic” slang references, focusing mainly on British slang, but which is also useful for Americanisms. But not only is it dated, but Partridge’s dating methodology is suspect. A careful researcher may still find this book useful on occasion, but there are better, more recent slang dictionaries available.

I relied on this book rather heavily for the older entries on this site, not so much nowadays.
